Cheating Using Mobile Phones Cheating Using Mobile Phones Cheating Using Mobile PhonesSecondary SchoolsWith so much importance being placed on just a few exams during their teenage years, is it really a surprise that that many pupils decide to try to cheat their way to a higher grade? Ofqual, the exam regulator from England, have just published a report disclosing how the number of pupils involved in `exam malpractice` more than doubled between 2017 and 2017. The most common form of illicit exam behaviour was smuggling `unauthorised materials` into the venue. This could be small pieces of paper containing relevant information (cheat notes as they were called in my day), but were usually mobile phones or other internet enabled devices. With a store house bigger than the library of Alexandria in a small, easily concealable device, the temptation to sneak a phone into the exam hall must be overwhelming. I suspect that if mobile devices were available when I was a student, may grades would have been far higher. I`m jesting of course - I received top grades in all my exams. The report made it clear that `In most cases, it was a mobile phone or other electronic communications device,` that led to a student being censured for misconduct. 80% of all cases we down to the use of a phone during an exam, while plagiarism accounts for 17% of misdemeanours. Ofqual have said that in the majority of cases cheating students were penalised with a reduction in their grade. Exactly how these reductions are calculated hasn`t been disclosed - perhaps the browsing history on the offender`s mobile device is examined, so the extent of their nefarious deeds can be determined. Even though there has been a 25% rise in the number of offenders caught cheating, the actual proportion of students engaging in this activity is very low. The 2,715 penalties given to 2,585 students make only a mere 0.015% of the 18 million exams sat in 2016 and 2017. The percentage is extremely low - either the students are extremely adept in surreptitiously squirrelling away smart phones about their person, or very little cheating is actually occurring in the exam hall. The latter case seems to me to be the more likely: the stark, fearful environment of the exam hall does not strike me as a place where it would be easy to secretly scour the internet on a small screen. Apparently most exam venues are now decked out with CCTV cameras, so even if your activities escape the notice of the patrolling sentries, marching with slow and steady step down the aisles of desks, you may still come unstuck when footage of your iniquitous deeds are later discovered. Many exam questions resist being aced by mere google intervention, as they strike a more opinionated tone, rather than a mere factual one. Instead of asking `in what year did Hitler reoccupy the rhineland`, the question might be `in your opinion what were the causes of the second world war?` A more concerning detail of the Ofqual report is the increase in college and school staff involved in exam malpractice. The numbers increased from 360 during 2016, to 895 in 2017 - a disconcerting rise indeed. Actual details of the misdeeds of the staff is not present in the report, but is likely to include failure to ensure strict conditions are maintained in exam halls. Ofqual said one of the reasons for the increase in staff malpractice is different exam boards, the AQA being one example, have recently taken a tougher position against individual misconduct. `Exam boards are more likely to issue formal written warnings for similar offences rather than informal advisory notes this year. This still involves a very small proportion of the total number of staff in England,` the exam regulator Ofqual said. The report offered a more detailed breakdown of the cheating relating to each academic subject: maths and computer science came out on top, together accounting for a third of all cases. In relation to plagiarism, computing GCSE was by far in the lead, hardly surprising given that the assessment tasks for the GCSE exam had been leaked and circulated online. It’s time to reassess your teacher recruitment strategy Great teachers are the foundation of your school, but are you doing enough to make sure you attract them? To earn the attention of candidates today, it’s time for international school leaders to start thinking like modern marketers. (I know, that's probably the last thing you want to hear, marketing is one of those words that make people squeamish, but it's not nearly as complicated as you might be thinking.) Prospective teachers start off as strangers to your school. Your hiring process has to work to attract, engage and convert them into candidates, new hires and, eventually, future employee advocates - a process often referred to as inbound recruiting. Most international schools don’t have an inbound recruitment strategy in place (or if they do, they’re still in the early stages of developing it) which makes the opportunity huge for forward-thinking school leaders. Here are several steps you can use to elevate your recruiting process this year, using the inbound methodology. 1. Develop your candidate persona It stands to reason that in order to attract the kind of teachers you want working at your school, your careers page and job postings need to resonate with these particular types of candidates. Your first step here should be to bring your ideal candidate to life by creating a persona (I recommend Beamery’s guide to help get you started). To do this, you’ll need to get inside your ideal candidate’s head and understand who they are as a job seeker. So ask yourself the following: What’s your ideal teaching candidate looking for in a job? Where do they go to find out more about a school and to look for jobs? What questions do they have about the position and your school? You need to know the answers to these if you’re going to reach your candidate with the right messaging, at the right time. Not only will you know who you’re trying to attract, the answers you’ve gathered will form the basis for the content on your careers page and job postings, too. Go look at Teach Away’s 2018 survey of over 12,618 international teaching candidates, to start with. What do candidates say they want? Yes, it’s a given that they’re looking for the right salary and bonus structure, as well as extra job perks like free accommodation and health insurance, but the answer is pretty simple: they’re really looking for professional development. The best teachers want to learn. They want to grow their teaching skills. They want more mentorship. They want to be better teachers so they can make a difference to students at your school and grow in their careers. So ask yourself, is your recruitment content spotlighting the opportunities for development at your school? If not, are there blog posts, videos and social media content you can incentivitize your current teachers to create that will do the heavy lifting for you? Here are some other ways you can find answers to the questions above: Survey your existing teachers - ask them what they like about working at your school and what their goals, motivations and interests are. Talk to everyone involved in the hiring process at your school about the kind of things they'd like to see in a new teacher and the way that they currently look for candidates. 2. Breathe some life into your employer brand Now that you know who you’re trying to reach, it’s time to fill them in on why they would want to work at your school. Looking for a teaching job in 2018 looks a lot different than it did in 2008. Back then, international teachers had relatively few ways to find out about what it was really like to work at your school. Candidates nowadays have access to platforms, like Glassdoor and Reddit, that offer first-hand insights into your school’s working environment, benefits offered and information on the kind of compensation they can expect. They can even reach out to current teachers at your school over social media, like LinkedIn and Twitter. This means it’s time to evaluate the information that’s currently available on your school website. How quickly can a teacher find out the information about the role and the context that they need to know when considering a career move overseas? AIDS Awareness

The PRIDE agency on campus held HIV/AIDS testing for any gay male who wanted to get tested. Testing was done at PRIDE’s LGBTQ Resource Center, located at the Union second floor room A211. People from Thagard and Leon County came to test. Testing was done between  on September 27th  on September 27thfrom 1pm- 4pm. All tests were rapid 20 minute tests, so you don’t have to wait so many weeks wondering the worst. As an incentive for getting tested as well those who were tested were given a $5 gift card to a business of choice. A $5 gift card  shouldnt  be what brings gay men in to get tested however. Gay men should want to know their status. It’s like getting that yearly physical. It’s not pleasant, but it’s all for a better living quality. It is one of my beliefs that knowledge is power. The more we know the more we can do. HIV/AIDS testing  isnt  something to worry about. It is an examination, one that can help you in the long run. In this life there are many things we are worried about, things we know nothing about. One thing we can know is our own status. The process is painless. Depending how you get it done. At PRIDE’s LGBTQ Resource Center they were doing rapid testing. A 20 minute wait is the max you would wait. You just had to fill out some paper work, swab your gums with special swab that will show if you’re negative or positive. It’s quick and easy. PRIDE is an agency for Florida State University as a part of Student Government. It works towards educated and helping any in regards to LGBTQ issues. They are mostly known for the drag show they put on every first Friday of the fall and spring semester. Yet,  theyve  do more than that. Such as free HIV testing that was held on September 27th.  They have done free HIV/AIDS testing regularly at their resource center before. Next month they plan a week of events for Coming Out Week, in celebrating National Coming Day. Also, they host an Alternative Prom every spring for those who  didnt  spent their prom in high school the way they wanted to. Simply by knowing your status and keeping up with it can change many lives. Knowing is just half the battle. If you know what something is you know how to deal with it. It’s no longer a boogie man in the shadows.
